You know what I could have really used in high school and college? A club for multircial, multiethnic, blended, mixed kids.
Alas! There were none!
But why is this so? Let's explore!
Why No Mixed Student Organization on Your Campus?
- Small student body
- This isn't always true, but a small mixed demographic could be the result of a small student body in general.
- I go to a private, liberal arts school. Compared to a school like UCLA, we're tiny!
- Lack of funds
- There just might not be enough money for your school to fund all the student organizations and resources that they need.
- Schools deal with privilege issues too, just like we do.
- Lack of action
- The big reason why there's probably no mixed student organization of some kind on your campus. :P
- Someone(s) need to spearhead the movement. *wink wink*
Here's what you can do:
Put up fliers around campus for an interest-session in a mixed student organization at _____ time on ______ date at ________ location. Even if the club doesn't get off the ground, you'll still have identified possible community members.
We're all busy with tests, projects and presentations. If you simply don't have the time to commit to starting a student organization, that's completely understandable. But if finding others who may be dealing with the same issues you face, or who celebrate their unique identities as you'd like to celebrate them, the extra effort is worth it.
