Online Resources: Multicultural Familia

Internet Resource for Mixed (Multiracial, Multiethnic) Folks: "Multicultural Familia"

Welcome to another installment of the Online Resources series!  Last time we looked at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's page on multiracial families (found here) and The Multiracial Network blog (found here).

In this installment, we'll talk about the website Multicultural Familia (found here) and how it can be a great resource for multiracial, multiethnic, blended, mixed folks.

Multicultural Familia: A Great Resource for All Ages

As you may have guessed, Multicultural Familia has a lot of great stuff no matter how old you are.  As teens, college students and otherwise "young adults," identifying as mixed, some sections of the site that might interest you specifically are:

Empowerment

  • "Empowerment" includes subsections:
    • "Give Back"
    • "Film & Videos"
    • "Books and Lit"
  • There are great announcements about how you can get involved or contribute to other mixed folks' efforts (social justice-related, commerically, etc.)
    • Try looking at the posts about what other multiracial/multiethnic teens, students and young people are up to!

Society

  • "Society" includes subsections:
    • "News"
    • "Opinion"
    • "Politics"
    • "Religion"
    • "Race Talk"
    • "Feminism"
    • "Health"
    • "Racism"
  • Probably Multicultural Familia's largest section, "Society" has posts and discussions about current events as they relate to the mixed community.
    • Many resent posts deal with politics and race issues.  They're a great resource for us blended youths as we get oldet and want to make informed decisions when it comes to politics.

Relationships

  • "Relationships" includes subsections:
    • "Intercultural Relationships"
    • "Interfaith Relationships"
    • "Interracial Relationships"
  • Whether you're new to the dating game or an experienced player, this section has a lot of really informative posts from the site staff and guest writers.
    • As a young person, you might not have a lot of "relationship experience," or might not be in a place where relationships interest you.  This section is still a great resource for anything that may come your way, or come the way of friends and family that you'd like to support.

Socialize

  • "Socialize" includes subsection:
    • "Events"
  • This section updates the mixed community about events, conferences and gatherings that are of interest to us blended folks.
    • Look for events in your area!  If there's something that really interests you but is too far away, why not try to host a similar event for your local multiracial and/or multiethnic community?
  • "Socilaize" gives opportunities for you to make aconnections with other mixed teens, students and young people looking.

What do you think about Multicultural Familia?  Are there any sites that you've found useful as a mixed teen, college student and/or young person?  Let us know!

That's it for today, folks.  As always, please feel free to leave a comment or question in the box below.  "Growing Up Mixed" is a safe space.

Stay sassy!
